Emergency Management

Emergency Instructions for Residents and Visitors in case of nuclear power plant emergency for those in Waterford

A Message to Waterford Residents and Visitors:
The map below represents a change in host community assignments for all Waterford residents and visitors in the event of an emergency at Millstone Power Station.
The host community is East Hartford. The Town of Wethersfield will provide shelter capacity to support evacuees reporting to East Hartford. The pre-designated evacuation routes would be taken if public protective actions, involving an evacuation, are directed by the Governor.

The State of Connecticut Office of Emergency Management, the City of East Hartford, the Town of Wethersfield, and Waterford's Emergency Management Director have all reviewed this change to an enhanced and consolidated host community operation. This will provide in depth capability of reception.

Primary Evacuation Route: Take Rt. I-95 South to Rt. 9 North, to Rt. I-91 North, to Exit 25-26 (Rt. 3 North). Take Exit 25, cross over the Putnam Bridge, to Rt. 2 West, to Exit 5A (Main St., East Hartford). Take a Right at light onto Brewer St. to intersection with Forbes St. Take a Left on Forbes St. to East Hartford High School.

Alternate Evacuation Route: Take Rt. 85 North to Rt. 82 West, to Rt. 11 North, to Rt. 2 West, to Exit 5A (Main St., East Hartford). Take a Right at light onto Brewer St. to intersection with Forbes St. Take a Left onto Forbes St. to East Hartford High School.

These changes will soon be reflected in the upcoming revision to the "Emergency Planning At Millstone Station" booklet and in the next updated telephone directory emergency information yellow pages. The State's Emergency Alert System (EAS) public information messages have also been adjusted to reflect this change.

You may wish to print out a copy of this letter and the map below and place them in your current telephone directory, which contains emergency instructions and information on Pages 2 and 3 of the Yellow Pages. If you have any questions, please contact the First Selectman's Office at 444-5834 or the Waterford Emergency Management Director at 442-9585. Thank you for your attention to this important public safety matter.
Sincerely,
Dan Steward
